Blockbuster...Out of Buisness!

Yes, the title says it. Blockbuster is going out of buisness and I am pissed severely.
Well, it isn't totally out of buisness yet. However they are closing down some stores and the one that I have realied on my entire life has closed down! My internal fury cannot be explained! I have gone to that particular Blockbuster for as long as I can remember, now how am I supposed to watch all my classics, Netflix?! No, because Netflix SUCKS. Honestly, it has the poorest selection I have ever came across. It is all about new films (even that selection isn't worth bragging) and has very very few classics, which it desperately needs!
So I honestly have no idea how I can continue my legacy of being a movie buff if I have no way of watching all the classics. I guess I'll just...pass by...:'(

1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die

This was a Christmas gift for me. I had seen it on backs of book covers and so finnaly I looked it up on the awesome Amazon.ca, and I found it there. Soon enough I unwrapped my gift and found that there.
That was the start of my own movie-revolution.
Let's just start off with the fact that if I didnt get this book, I would still be a horror obsessed teenager. Serously, look at the movies i need to see list before and now and you will see a massive difference.
Anyways, this book is simply and utterly amazing! If you are a film lover, that this book is an absolute must have. With 1001 movies featured in the book (all types, ages and genres), along with a full review for each one, you will never be lost on which movie to rent at Blockbuster or watch on Netflix. Written by hundreds of different film critics, each review explains either loosely or concisely on why the film is featured, if it is for being shockingly controversial (Pink Flamigos, A Clockwork Orange), being absolutely hilarious (Borat, The Hangover), being utterly terrifying (The Exorcist, Paranormal Activity) or just being simply one of the best (The Shawshank Redemption, Gone With the Wind, The Godfather, etc.). The book has it all, yet it comes with a downside.
There are films that are not in this book that by all means NEEDED to be in this book. Some of those include The Green Mile, Bram Stoker`s Dracula (1992), The Passion of the Christ, and many more. I do understand that some movies just don`t qualify, yet there are movies that BEYOND qualify, and it makes me severely angry to see those particular movies not featured.
Yet don`t let that get you down. The book is amazing and a must-have. Great for gifts! Amd if you are someone like me who is stilling filling your list of movies that you need to see, this book will help you. it helped me, sitting at my desk and writing down on a piece of paper all the movies  I need to see. Yet I`m not going to drone on. Just read it. Period.

Fargo

My movie list is going well so far! Though I went looking for Pan's Labyrinth, Kramer vs. Kramer, or Don't Look Now, and didn't find ANY, I cam out with another film-Fargo.
Fargo is the story of Jerry, whom works in his father-in-law's car dealership and has gotten himself in financial problems. He tries various schemes to come up with money needed for a reason that is never really explained. It has to be assumed that his huge embezzlement of money from the dealership is about to be discovered by father-in-law. When all else falls through, plans he set in motion earlier for two men to kidnap his wife for ransom to be paid by her wealthy father (who doesn't seem to have the time of day for son-in-law). From the moment of the kidnapping, things go wrong and what was supposed to be a non-violent affair turns bloody with more blood added by the minute. Jerry is upset at the bloodshed, which turns loose a pregnant sheriff from Brainerd, MN who is tenacious in attempting to solve the three murders in her jurisdiction.
Joel and Ethan Coen have striked the big one with this 1996 film (though they have many times after with fims such as No Country for Old Men and True Grit) and have made a film that doesn't fail to stand the test of time, with an intellegent plot, great acting, and brilliant directing.
Yes, the acting is great. Frances McDormand soars (obviously, she did win Best Actress in the Academy Awards) and makes her part highly believable. Yes, believable. She will make you believe like the film isn`t really a film but rather just the actual story with someone coincidentally filming everything in secret. Is it her Minnesota voice that makes it believable? Is it the actual human-like behaviour that makes it stunningly amazing? Or is it just the fact that she had a role with a certain type of character and that she mastered that character with all she had? I'll take the last one, please. With a side of fries.
So, it just goes to show that you DO need an intellegent plot and you DO need great acting and you DO need highly skilled directors to make a good film. And this film is here to prove it.

Requiem For A Dream

So I have a list. And on that list is a list of movies that I must see before I turn 15. On that list was the Stanly Kubrick classic, Barry Lyndon. It wasn't in Blockbuster. Damn.
So, needing another movie on my list, I chose Requiem For A Dream, excited for a compelling and serious drama, which so happens to be my favourite type of movie. I soon popped the DVD into the DVD player and happily watched my movie.
The sheer brilliance could not be brought out into words.
The movie basically grabbed me where it hurts and then ripped my voicebox out so I could do nothing but blubber like an idiot at the ending. No joke. I cried like there was no tomorrow. I couldn't help myself! It shocked me, it got to me, it hurt me, it made me feel so intensely disturbed that I hid under blankets, afraid that drugs were going to come and get me, smash my dreams, and ruin my life. This is why I loved it.
A film paralleling the lives of Sara Goldfarb, a lonely, TV obsessed widow, and her son Harry, his girlfriend Marion, and his drug dealer friend Tyrone. After learning that she will make an appearance on a TV game show, Sara tries to lose weight so that she can fit into her prized red dress, and becomes hooked on diet pills. Meanwhile, Harry and his friends are taking heroin and cocaine. We then witness the disasterous consequences and the downward spiral their lives take as a result of their addictions.
Jared Leto, Jeniffer Connely, and Marlon Wayans play amazing in their roles, yet Ellen Burstyn is devine. This is easily the best role of her entire career, no doubt. her role of Sara Goldfarb will make you hate drugs even more than you already did (I hope). She will make the film hard to watch. Having to see this frail old woman go from perfectly normal to alone and insane because she had a dream and ruined it because of her addiction to diet pills is too much for even me to bear. And I have seen alot. It actually angers me to think how she lost the award of best supporting actress to Julia Roberts. Academy Awards, I trusted you? Honestly, are you addicted to diet pills or something?
Oh Lord, sweet God in Heaven, the main theme. Congrats Clint Mansell, you have created a modern masterpiece that is more familiar than any other movie theme ever. Infact I'm listening to it on iTunes right now. I'm such a nerd.
I could right a review for this movie a mile long, so I'm going to cut it here. The sheer genius of this film is so brilliant it is enough to make anyone go on drugs...literally.
